Adrian Tarbeck

Fire & Blood

Adrian Tarbeck was a knight who briefly commanded the western host during its campaign in the riverlands. At the Red Fork, his decision to lead a select group of knights across the river and around the enemy’s lines helped turn a hard-fought crossing into a Lannister victory; soon afterward, he was killed in battle by Ser Harry Penny.

Position in the Western Host

Adrian assumed command after Jason Lannister received a mortal wound at the Red Fork. His promotion came amid a costly struggle: the riverlords, led by Petyr Piper and Tristan Vance, knew the ground and had repelled three Lannister attempts to force the crossing. With Jason dying, Adrian took charge of the western host and was responsible for renewing the attack.

The Red Fork

Rather than rely only on a direct assault, Adrian and a hundred picked knights removed their heavy armor, swam upstream, and circled behind Tristan Vance’s lines. Their attack struck the riverlords from the rear while the main Lannister force pressed the crossing. Vance fell, the riverlord ranks broke, and thousands of westermen poured across the Red Fork. Adrian’s maneuver was a decisive contribution to the western advance, following the repeated failures of the earlier assaults.

Acorn Hall and Death

The western host continued east under Adrian’s command. At Acorn Hall, Lord Joseth Smallwood joined Petyr Piper and the remnants of the defeated riverlord force, briefly checking the westermen. Three days later the riverlords regrouped under Ser Harry Penny. In the ensuing battle, Penny killed Adrian; Penny himself died soon afterward while slaying Adrian’s commander. The Lannisters again prevailed, cutting down the riverlords as they fled, and resumed their march under the aged Lord Humfrey Lefford, who commanded from a litter because of his many wounds.

Role in the Campaign

Adrian’s brief command marks two contrasting turns in the western campaign: his initiative at the Red Fork helped break the riverlords’ defense, while his death at Acorn Hall ended his role before the host reached Harrenhal. The host continued after him, but the change of commanders—from Jason to Adrian, and then to Humfrey Lefford—shows the cost of the advance even as the Lannisters repeatedly won the field.
